If you have found this post, I assume you, like me, have a child bursting with creativity and wonder. A wild child that is full of fire that shines bright and sometimes maybe even burns a little hot. For those raising a spirited wild child, you know the extreme joy and, at times, complete overwhelm that comes with the territory.

Parenting often feels like climbing a mountain, it’s a hard, intense effort, but man! The views from the top are incredible. When you rise to the summit (or a false summit, as is often the case in parenting, because the job is never truly done), the work is always worth it. But when you are in the thick of it as a nature-loving, slightly overwhelmed mom, don’t make parenting harder than it has to be.

Sure, Pinterest has inspo for elaborate kids’ activities and nature craft ideas, but the real magic lies in this simple, open-ended nature craft for kids. It’s low pressure, fun, and encourages creativity. Better yet, it’s the perfect activity to get your kiddo outside exploring natural materials while using their incredible imagination to create unique works of art.

Whether homeschooling, teaching outdoors, or just seeking a screen-free family activity, this open-ended nature craft for kids requires minimal supplies and lets children lead the way.

🌿 Why Choose an Open-Ended Nature Craft for Kids?

  • 🧠 Boosts creativity and problem-solving skills by encouraging children to explore their ideas freely

  • 🌳 Connects kids to the outdoors and nature’s beauty

  • ✂️ Minimal prep and materials—just a basket and whatever nature provides

  • 🧘‍♀️ Low-pressure, stress-free crafting that’s perfect for any age

What to Bring on a Nature Walk for Crafts

  • A basket or bag for collecting natural materials (sticks, leaves, pinecones, feathers, etc.). Although we kept it real chill and just used our pockets

  • Optional craft supplies: glue, yarn, string, cardboard, beads, feathers—use what you have

🎨 Open-Ended Nature Craft Ideas From Our Walk

During our last nature walk, my daughter Ruby was adamant about making a “weapon” out of sticks (a great example of how an open-ended nature craft for kids allows for imaginative play and creative expression). Later, she transformed her slingshot stick into a colourful “wilderness welcome branch” by wrapping it with yarn and adding sparkly gems. We’re proudly displaying it at our front door.

The real beauty of this creation? No instructions needed—just her creativity, which resulted in a unique piece of art and a Mom who filled the morning with minimal planning.

Nature Inspiration: Learn About Beavers on Your Walk

The image shows a close-up of a tree that was chewed down by a beaver.

Something cool to come out of our nature walk was the downed tree we spotted, freshly chewed by a beaver—nature’s incredible engineer!

Beavers build dams to create ponds that protect their homes and provide habitats for many animals. They also have incredible teeth with a hard, orange, iron-rich enamel on the front and softer dentin at the back.

The beaver must continuously gnaw on wood as their teeth grow, to keep them sharp and at a proper length.

📚 Extend the Learning With A Walk in Nature Journal

My Nature Journal contains a guided walk that shines a spotlight on the beaver. Check it out! It’s a four-page guide that takes kids on a nature walk with space to record observations, draw what they see, record field notes, and practice literacy by writing a story based on their observations.

Adding a bit of nature education like this enriches the open-ended nature craft experience for kids. And if you like the experience, A Walk in Nature Journal: Recordings of a Wild Child, available in digital and physical formats, has plenty more guided walks to enjoy.
